Topics
Topics Basic Course part 1
Epidemiology of diving accidents: A review of recent studies of diving accidents worldwide: the introduction and justification for this course.
Basic principles of hyperbaric physics and physiology: The influence of atmospheric and hydrostatic pressure on the human body will be addressed. Topics include the aspects of physics that are relevant to diving medicine, the phenomenon of bubble formation and the physiology of decompression.
Diving diseases: An overview of causality, diagnosis and prevention of diving diseases is given in relation to the different phases of a dive: descent, bottom time and ascent.
International guidelines for the diving medical examination: This unit teaches the practitioner to conduct a diving medical examination and provide sound medical advice to divers. It will be delivered as three separate subunits. The first addresses the effects of diving on important and critical existing pathology and the influence of that pathology on diving safety. The second looks at other non-critical pathology the medical practitioner may encounter during the diving medical. The third subunit illustrates how a diving medical examination should be performed.
Case studies:Case studies on diving medical problems are presented over the course of the program. They will be discussed in small work groups and are used to highlight important points from the lectures.
Diving in practice: Students who do not yet have a scuba qualification, are offered the opportunity to complete an entry level open water course. Certified divers can choose between advanced diving courses or a ten dive package (see registration form for options)
General information
Venue:
This year, the course is will take place in the Seychelles. These Islands are located about 1,600 km east of Kenya in the Indian Ocean. The republic consists of about 200 islands (known from the Bounty commercials), and Mahé is the largest island.
The course location and hotel accommodation are part of the Coral Beach Resort. The Seychelles Underwater Centre, a 5* PADI Golden Palm center, is located near the hotel. Most dive destinations are approximately five to ten minutes away by boat.
The resort is about fifteen-minute drive from the airport (traffic permitting) and located directly on the golden sandy beach of Beau Vallon on the Indian Ocean. The resort has three bars, four restaurants and a gym. Within a five to ten-minute walk from the Coral Beach resort there are five other restaurants.
In the warm waters around the Seychelles are huge quantities of fish. Both the macro-enthusiast and the "big game" diver can enjoy the sea life. Our stay will take place in the middle of whale shark season (October to December), where encounters with the largest plankton eating fish on earth may well be possible. Several wreck dives can be made. On the course-free days, a day trip taken to one of the more remote dive sites is possible. You can also make a day trip to other attractions on Mahé or neighboring islands.
Number of participants:
Given the structure and the interactive nature of this course, up to 15 people can register. Partners may also register; they do not count as a course participant.
Entrance Level:
The course is open to all medical doctors.
Date:
November 5th - 12th, 2016
Accreditation:
The course is part of the international certification of Medical Examiners of Divers.
Certificate:
On completion of the course, all participants will receive a certificate of attendance
Course materials:
The course manual will be sent to you approximately ten days before departure. We also advise all English-speaking participants to purchase a copy of ‘Diving and Subaquatic Medicine’ by Edmonds, Bennett, Lippmann and Mitchell 4th or 5th edition.
Diving arrangements:
We dive with the largest dive center on the island, the Seychelles Underwater Centre, a 5* PADI Golden Palm center. If you are a certified diver and do not need a diving course, a ten-dive package is included in the registration fee. Any rental of diving equipment is not included in the costs (air and weights are included). For those who have never dived before, the Open Water course is an excellent start (see registration form). On the non-course days it is possible to take dive or land excursions. The water temperature in November is around 26oC– 28oC.
Travel:
If starting your journey from Schiphol Amsterdam airport, you will fly with Emirates via Dubai to the final destination, Mahé. The resort is around a fifteen-minute drive from the airport. Emirates currently allows 30 kg of checked in luggage for this trip. If you are starting from a different location, you may arrange your own flight, in which case there will be a discount (see registration form).
Costs:
The basic price of the diving medicine course, including flights, transfers, accommodation (based on 2 pax sharing a hotel room*), breakfast, ten boat dives, diving medicine course and all the course literature, starts at €3075. This includes the currently known flight surcharges**.
For registrations received after June 25th an additional cost may apply, as late bookings can be a lot more expensive due to the lesser availability of airline seats***.
As the airlines and accommodation providers require a deposit, we ask for a down payment of €550 at registration.
*) based on availability
**) price adjustments by airlines, governments, hotels and currency exchange rates can be passed on.
***) as flights fill up, seats become more expensive, so the later the booking, the more expensive the flights.
