Topics
This course aims to increase the knowledge of the diver doctor in the field of ENT and underwater flora and fauna. To this end, these two areas are treated by experienced specialists.
ENT: in addition to deepening general knowledge about the ENT field, the following three focus areas form the core of this part:
- Whether or not you can/may dive with existing pathology relating to hearing, balance and smell. And the advice that can be given.
- The problems that diving can cause in the ENT area and how they can possibly be prevented.
- The treatment of ENT pathology arising during or after the dive.
Marine life: Based on the knowledge of marine biology, distinguish various groups whose contact with the diver can lead to undesirable/dangerous situations. It discusses:
- The behaviour of underwater life.
- How to avoid contact.
- The risks of contact.
- The consequences and treatment of contact
After this course the diving doctor is supposed to:
- To be better able to identify problems during a preventive diving medical examination in the ENT area that could pose a risk while diving.
- To be better able to assess the various conditions that can occur during diving for their possible effects on diving safety with regard to the ENT area and contacts with underwater flora and fauna. He/she is expected to be able to provide well-founded advice to the diver on this matter.
- To be able to initiate adequate treatment caused by ENT problems that have occurred during or after diving or that are the result of contact with marine life.
General information
Location:
The course is held at the beautiful Temple Point resort, built in traditional Swahili style. The resort is located in the Watamu Marine National Park, at the intersection of the Mida Creek and the Indian Ocean. It has its own private beach.
All rooms at Temple Point have air conditioning and a modern bathroom. From a patio or balcony you can enjoy views of the Indian Ocean, Mida Creek or the lush tropical gardens.
Temple Point's Clubhouse Restaurant serves African and international dishes à la carte or buffet. Guests can enjoy panoramic views of Mida Creek at the bar, which serves cocktails. You can also enjoy a massage or hot tub session in the spa and wellness centre. Watamu is 5 minutes by car/tuk tuk and offers shops, restaurants and bars. The ruins of Gedi are 15 km away.
The adjacent Underwater National Park (Watamu Marine National Park & Reserve) is one of the oldest in Africa. Fishing is prohibited in the National Park. Encounters with turtles, whale sharks, dolphins and manta rays are not uncommon here. There are more than 150 species of colorful and healthy hard and soft corals and a wide variety of fish species. Watamu is also an important nesting area for turtles - especially green turtles and hawksbill turtles.

Boutique rooms also have a coffee/tea making facility. Reservations for the room type are on a first come basis... (see registration form).
Since the return flights are early on Sunday morning and the departure from the hotel is around midnight on Saturday, you can extend the room for an additional 1 night. . See registration form for extension options (7->8 nights).
Diving:
With the size of our groups, we use two collaborating dive operators so that 36 divers can enter the water in 3-4 boats. The transfer to the diving schools is approximately 8 minutes and is carried out by van. There is a 9-boat diving package per week for every diver. The problem is that later in the afternoon the sea becomes rougher so that 2 dives cannot be made every afternoon In order to get a good number of dives, diving is done on Friday in the morning and the course is in the afternoon. This allows two morning dives to be made on Sunday, Wednesday and Friday and one afternoon dive on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. If the weather is good, additional dives can be made. There is a National Park fee of $17 per day for diving in the Marine Park, which must be paid on site.
Costs:
Including (group) flights Amsterdam-Mombasa return, all transfers, accommodation based on half board Cozy room (with 2 persons) in Temple Point resort Watamu*, 9 boat dives and the diving medicine course, the starting price is €3395,-** (price level June 20th 2024). If there is a deviation from the standard flights, ticket prices may differ. Of course, you can also book a ticket yourself for which you will receive a discount on the above price. The later you book, the ticket price may increase because the availability of airline seats decreases***. If the price of deviating tickets increases, the additional costs will be added to the final invoice.
Since airlines and our accommodation require a down payment, we ask you for a down payment of €950 upon registration. This will of course be deducted from your final invoice amount.
Not included are the visa costs (approx. €65 , can be requested online) and the Marine park fee (see under Diving). Other additional costs such as extension and room upgrade are stated on the registration form.
*) based on availability
**) Price adjustments by airlines, governments, hotels and currency exchange rates can be disruptive.
***)As flights become fuller, seats become more expensive, so the closer to the departure date, the higher the amount can be.
